The Lorraine Hansberry Initiative’s

To Sit A While

in partnership with Gloria Molina Grand Park, Los Angeles

When | June 14 – June 30
Location | Gloria Molina Grand Park, Olive Court
Time | Park Hours 5:30 AM – 10 PM

Lorraine Hansberry was a prolific playwright, journalist, and activist. Her play A Raisin in the Sun was the first play by an African American woman produced on Broadway on March 11, 1959, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. It was revived on Broadway in 2004 and 2014. Generations of Black theater, television and film artists have been inspired by her masterpiece.

Los Angeles based artist Alison Saar’s sculpture work, entitled To Sit A While, features a figure of Hansberry surrounded by five bronze chairs, each representing a different aspect of her life and work. The life-size chairs are an invitation to the public to do just that: to sit with her and think.

In partnership with The Lorraine Hansberry Initiative and The Lilly’s To Sit A While is currently on a national tour and will be on display in Gloria Molina Grand Park June 14 – June 30.

In addition to the installation of To Sit A While, Gloria Molina Grand Park and The Lorraine Hansberry Initiative have partnered with local theater organizations and artists to engage in public programs, workshops, performances and panels inspired by Hansberry’s Legacy.
